It is often said that the manner in which we conduct ourselves will determine how we are perceived by others. It can also be said that how you conduct yourself online has become just as important as your behaviour offline, be it positive or negative. And this is how your personal brand is formed. Branding yourself is an integral part of telling your story, and lets you do it in your own voice. This gives you control over the narrative.
Building a personal brand on social media takes some work but, if done right, it can open doors and help you to form valuable, and potentially lucrative, connections. So how exactly do you develop a strong personal brand online? Here are four tips to level-up your social media game so that you can start making coin.
1. Clean Up Your Accounts
Decide which social media accounts you are going to focus on and delete any old accounts that no longer serve a purpose. For the platforms you will be using, make sure all that your information is complete and accurate. Remove any old content that does not resonate with you or your brand. A clear bio that explains who you are and what you stand for, along with a recent, recognisable photo, should do the trick.
2. Find Your Niche
In order to find your niche, two things need to be established: Who is your audience? And what is your area of expertise?
Developing a clear understanding of your social media target audience may be the most important thing you do to cement your personal brand online. Your target audience informs all elements of your social media approach. Make sure you have a clear understanding of who they are, their age group, where they live and, in some cases, their gender.
As for leveraging your expertise, everyone is good at something, whether it’s marketing, beauty or interior design. Ask yourself: Is it time for you to experiment a bit more? What type of content have you created that your followers have interacted with the most? Can you replicate this with similar content? The more unique and engaging the content you create on your chosen subject is, the more your followers will start to think of you as a leader in your field.
3. Be Active and Consistent
Having a social media presence ensures that you are *always* visible and at the forefront of your audience’s feeds. Post regularly so that you can keep your audience engaged. Be careful not to post too much though, as this can make your audience feel bored or overwhelmed. It’s all about balance!
Also, try as far as possible to stick to content related to your chosen area of expertise. Deviating from it can leave your audience feeling confused. Remember, the objective is to keep them interested and hungry for more.
Lastly, remain consistent across all of your social media platforms. Keep your brand voice, visuals and tone uniform. This will ensure that you are not only memorable but legit as well.
4. Engage With Your Audience
The only person who can get away with not engaging with their followers is Beyoncé, LOL! It has been proven time and again that responding on social media can significantly boost your personal brand. While responding to comments on your posts can be time-consuming, the payoff is having a devoted following which is crucial if you want to make an impact in the online world.
Social media is an amazing, probably even the best, way to grow your personal brand. All it takes is creativity, passion and consistency to keep things moving in the right direction. You’ve got this, girl!
