I’m a sucker for love and believe it should be celebrated, no matter the circumstances. I'm also a sucker for a good book, and getting lost in the pages of one is one of my favourite ways to indulge in some 'me time'. I recommend bringing the two together and enjoying a steamy night in with a sultry romance novel. Here’s a list of books that will captivate you from beginning to end, and bring happy tears to the hearts of other hopeless romantics!
1. The Bridgerton Series by Julia Quinn
Bridgerton was a huge hit on Netflix, but with just eight episodes, fans are thirsty for more raunchy scenes in over-the-top period costumes! The series, which is Downton Abbey meets Gossip Girl, is based on one of Julia Quinn’s eight-book series about the eight children of the Viscount Bridgerton, and its focus is on Daphne and her search for love. The characters are cute and spicy, so why not grab one of these books (or all of them) and get to know the rest of the Bridgerton fam? You won’t be disappointed!
2. Hlomu the Wife by Dudu Busani-Dube
If you have not yet read this book – sis, what rock have you been living under? If you decide to read it, clear your schedule because you’re going to be absorbed! Hlomu and Mqhele’s love story will have you experiencing all sorts of emotions. It has more than 500 pages but you will love all of them because it is relatable, thrilling and so unputdownable. Be warned – you will not look at taxi drivers the same way after reading this.
3. The 30th Candle by Angela Makholwa
An oldie but a goodie, this book is about four girlfriends Linda, Nolwazi, Dikeledi and Sade who are turning 30 and go through love experiences that will have you smiling or shaking in anger and disbelief. What I love so much about this book is the language; it’s such an enjoyable read and one you will likely want to gift your friends with after reading it.
4. Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
Oh my goodness, I get emotional just *thinking* about this book, and the subsequent film adaptation. I watched the movie first and I was so touched by Louisa Clark and Will Traynor’s romance, I had to go and read the book, just in case the film had missed anything. What a treat to then discover that she continued the story in two more books titled, After You and Still Me. You will need lots of tissues for this one, but it is hilarious, beautiful and on my list of best-ever romantic reads.
5. Anything Goes by A.C Taylor
Steamy sex? Check. Well-told love story? Check. Drama? Check. Crazy exes? Check! Alauni and Law’s love story unfolds quickly in this page-turner and they are faced with *so many* obstacles. Even though they might frustrate you at times, you will be rooting for them and their relationship throughout the book. Their love scenes will also, no doubt, leave you drooling!
6. Ayesha at Last by Uzma Jalaluddin
I did not read Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, I only watched the film. This fun book tells the exact same story, with a few added plot twists, through the characters of Ayesha and Khalid. You will fall in love with them both, and be hooked by the emotional rollercoaster that is their relationship. It is an incredible story about love, chasing one’s happiness and faith.
